The year is 1937. The infamous Edgewink gang, three of Boston's most ruthless criminals, travels to Bangor, Maine in search of a quiet place to rest and split their loot. Instead, they find ambush and death, and they and the treasure they had amassed--now lost, if it ever existed--become the stuff of local legend.

Seventy-five years later, a string of murders rocks the relatively quiet city. Why are people suddenly dying, and how does the local gangster legend tie in? Detective Lieutenant Thomas Clipper must look to the pages of history to solve a thoroughly modern crime.

I loved it. Part Crime novel, part Mystery. Read it overnight, drinking coffee and not able to put it down. I grew up in Bangor, and yes... it's really Bangor in the book. What I loved the most was the complex interweaving of the 75 year old story of the gang with modern day mystery action. Is there such a thing as a 'historical crime mystery'? Apparently, yes. On to the rest: the character's were well developed, and of course, the lead character Thomas Clipper, is a sort of Dick Tracy, Ironside, no-nonsense, flawed but functional, hero. You want to like him, but sometimes you just want to yell at him too. Perfect. The plot started out somewhat predictable, as most mystery who-done-it's are..although, you immediately get caught up in 'The Gang' story as well. Kudo's to the writer, for keeping both story lines clean, and interesting. You just know that it's all going to come together, and while some of the story is relatively straight forward, you'll be surprised at where you go (plot twist!), and how you 'get' to where you end up. (No spoilers here!). Note to everyone: This is NOT a CSI clone. The writing: Above Average to Excellent. Yes, really. I'm an avid mystery reader. I tend to like in-depth plots, character development, good setting/plot writing (think Agatha Christie, Harlen Coben, Dorothy Sayers, Conan Doyle, PD James, etc.). I'm not into gore and violence for my entertainment. That all said, Past Due was a hit for me. Overall, the writing was quite good, excellent in many places. I would say above average from what you find in the current crime mystery pulp these days. There were two spots that I saw (only two) that I would have liked just a tad more information/clarification or tighter writing, but this doesn't detract from the overall story line. And certainly, both are areas that could be developed in future Thomas Clipper mysteries???? An enjoyable read, with a great mix of historical fact and fictional characterization.

Past Due The Thomas Clipper Mysteries Book 1 edition by Richard Stockford Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

A story that starts in 1937 with some criminals on the run. They have a shot out with police from a lot of agencies with bad results for the police. One man survives and is put in the mental hospital to recover where he is killed by an inmate. The money and jewels they stole are missing and a variety of people over the next 70 years try to find them. The story picks up in the present time, 70 years later. The characters are not the memorable but the story has twists and turns that kep you turning pages. The killer in present time is not deduced until the last pages which helps make a good story.
Wow, what to say about a book that so deftly handles genre conventions while simultaneously being fresh and exciting?

Mr. Stockford manages to tell two separate stories and keep the reader turning pages; even though we have so many pieces of the puzzle already, the solution is a surprise. I found myself sometimes rooting for the "bad guys" and shaking my head at the "good guys," but the story's moral grounding remained strong and believable. Add in a brilliant callback to an actual historical event (Bangor is my hometown, so I'm familiar with the inspirational material for that portion of the novel), a main character you can't help but root for, the promise of a budding romance, and you can't lose!

(And did I mention Mr. Stockford writes like a dream? Plus he's hilarious; there's a line in chapter two that has me STILL laughing just thinking about it.)

Just a fabulous, fabulous book!
Past Due is a fantastic mystery book, especially if, like me, you enjoy the inner workings of the police force. The efforts of Thomas Clipper and his detectives in solving the murders taking place in Bangor are described in remarkable detail, and yet they are engaging, and keep the reader on his toes. The characters in this book are colorful and interesting, including a few endearing side characters which make this book really stand out, such as a hidden poet cop, or an obsessive failing FBI agent. Thomas Clipper himself is one of my favorite characters.

A great mystery book. If you like writers like Ed McBain or Donald Harstad, don't pass this book up.
Past Due is a good old-fashioned cops and robbers story with everything you need in a great story -good guys, bad guys, explosions, beautiful women, murder, mystery, jewels, secrets, romance and of course, the hero. Past Due is story that starts back in the 1930s with the bad guys wandering into the sleepy little town of Bangor, Maine. The story continues to unravel over the decades into modern times, with the secret and all the mystery that continues to surround it.

The author, Dick Stockford tells the story from the unique perspective of a police detective trying to solve a decades old mystery. The author, Dick Stockford, in fact, rose through the Bangor police department ranks from detective to Chief of Police and is able to tell this story, much of which is based on local historical fact, in a way that captivates his audience throughout the entire story. Well done and I highly recommend this excellent book for anyone looking to read a good old fashioned cops and robbers thriller.
Decided to try book because of good reviews but could not really get into the story.
The story kept me engaged. Clean witing, not a lot of fluff. Good characters. Getting ready to start book two.
This was a story told in ages past and present combined together to entice a Reeder to use their imagination. It's a well-written novel and keep your interest in surprise ending is well worth the time it took to get there
